Nenu2phar
Reducing the environmental impact of plastics

NENU2PHAR is a European project that addresses the current challenges related to the end-of-life of plastic waste and more specifically plastic packaging.
The NENU2PHAR partners will develop a production chain for PHAs (Polyhydroxyalkanoates) from sustainable and renewable resources: micro-algae that will use CO2 as a carbon source and then transform it into PHAs by bacterial means. This project aims to create an innovative value chain and reduce the environmental impact of bio-based plastics.
The main objectives are:
- Develop a competitive and sustainable resource for the production of PHAs,
- Formulate and functionalise the polymers to ensure they meet the needs of plastics manufacturers,
- Identify the processes required to ensure that the functional properties of the bioplastic are equal to or better than their petroleum-based counterparts,
- Develop a range of eco-designed prototypes for different industries (packaging, 3D printing filament, textiles for agriculture and medical),
- Demonstrate the adequacy of the value chain with the circular economy principle,
- Increase stakeholder and consumer awareness of bioplastics, to accelerate social acceptance and understanding of end-of-life processes.
